STEP 17 - DIGESTIVE SUPPORT

broken image

Age-related changes, such as slower and weaker gut motility, can mean that the gastro- intestinal system in seniors may not function as efficiently as it used to.

Digestive enzyme levels drop, so absorption of foods can be affected and seniors may find that they are less able to tolerate or digest certain foods.

Bacterial overgrowth can affect absorption of foods and cellular regeneration is slower, so damaged digestive cells and tissues are not being repaired and replaced as quickly.

Underlying medical conditions and certain medications can also affect gut health. Inadequate amounts of water intake and increased periods of inactivity can quickly lead to constipation in seniors which, if left untreated, can affect brain health and cognitive ability. Research has shown that clearing the bowels can rectify mild cases of confusion almost immediately.

Essential Oils can be of great benefit to the older digestive system, especially when used topically on the abdomen. These are Essential Oils that can help with DIGESTIVE SUPPORT:

  • PEPPERMINT

  • FENNEL

  • CARDAMOM

  • GINGER

  • BLACK PEPPER
